Course Grading

The course grade will reflect student participation and professionalism at ECC and in the community, and the quality of assigned written work. Students are required to attend meetings with community leaders and ECC staff, group meeting with the professor and other students, and organized tours. Details of grading expectations will be on the course outline.

Course Responsibilities

Professionalism
You are ambassadors of Ryerson University while in Abaco and at Every Child Counts (ECC) School. You are expected to be professional at ECC and in the community.

If you break Bahamian law or the Ryerson Academic and Non-Academic Student Codes of Conduct, are unprofessional in the school and community, or endanger the learning environment of the ECC students or your peers, you may be asked to go home immediately and will forfeit the course. This decision is made by the ECC school administration in collaboration with Professor Golden.

Mandatory Attendance and illness
Students will be required to attend pre-departure information sessions in Toronto. All classes and course scheduled events in Abaco are mandatory, unless you are ill and require medical attention. A hangover or careless sunburn is not an acceptable excuse for non-attendance.

Academic Accommodation
Due to the nature of this course in a developing country, there are limits to academic accommodation that can be made for individuals with special needs, as assessed by Ryerson Accommodation Centre. If you require accommodation through the Center, you must inform us of any accommodation requirements on the course selection form, sent to all Faculty of Arts students. Without this information we cannot determine our ability to make necessary arrangements.

Health Concerns
You are responsible for your own health. While there are qualified doctors in Abaco available 24 hours, there is minimal hospital assistance on the island and only two ambulances. You should inform the course Professor of any anaphylactic allergies. Check Ryerson International and the Government of Canada travel website for any additional health considerations before travel to Abaco, the Bahamas. All students must have medical travel insurance.
